The short answer · D1 football in one minute
Division I football has two levels: FBS, the biggest programs and the bowl games, and FCS, with its own playoff. Both are D1.
Since 2025, schools in the House settlement have a roster limit of 105 and can fund as many of those players as they choose, instead of the old 85-scholarship cap.
What D1 football coaches look at
Size and frame. Height, weight and how much you can still grow into, for your position.
Speed and explosiveness. The 40-yard dash, shuttle, vertical and broad jump.
Film. Game film first. Coaches want to see you play, not just test.
Position skills. What a coach at your position needs to see: hands, footwork, leverage, eyes.
Grades and character. Coaches call your high school coach. They want to know how you practice and how you treat people.
When D1 football coaches can contact you
Football runs on its own recruiting calendar, with set periods for contact, evaluations and visits. Check the current NCAA football recruiting calendar on ncaa.org, and email coaches before then so you're already on their list.
Paths to D1 football
Most players are recruited out of high school. Some go FCS first and move up. Some are preferred walk-ons who earn a spot. Junior college is a real path too.
