The short answer · D1 baseball in one minute
Division I baseball is the top level of college baseball. Since 2025, schools in the House settlement have a roster limit of 34 and can fund as many of those players as they choose, instead of the old scholarship cap.
That means fewer roster spots and more competition for each one. The athletes who get them can show real numbers, real film, and the grades to get in.
What D1 baseball coaches measure
Pitchers. Fastball velocity first, then command, movement and secondary pitches.
Hitters. Exit velocity and the quality of contact, then approach at the plate.
Speed. The 60-yard dash for most position players, and home to first.
Arm. Throwing velocity from your position: infield, outfield, and pop time for catchers.
Everything else. Size and projection, your film, your grades, and how you compete and carry yourself.
The numbers only help if they're honest. A coach will measure you again, so know your real ones and how they change over time.
When D1 baseball coaches can contact you
Division I baseball coaches can't start off-campus recruiting contact until August 1 before your junior year of high school. You can email them before then, and you should. Check the current NCAA baseball recruiting calendar for calls, texts and visits.
Paths to D1 baseball
Most D1 players are recruited out of high school through travel ball, camps at schools they want, and coaches seeing them more than once.
Junior college is a real path too. Plenty of players develop at a JUCO for a year or two and move on to Division I.
And players keep developing in college. Where you start isn't where you have to finish.
Your plan
- Measure your numbers.Velocity, exit velo, 60 time, arm strength. Honestly measured, and tracked over time.

- Film it.Short clips of game at-bats, bullpen or defense. Recent, real, best reps first.
- Stay eligible.Core courses and core GPA. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
- Pick your schools.Go to the camps of programs you'd actually attend, at a level where you'd play.
- Email the coaches.Numbers, film, grades, schedule. Here's how.
